The Art of Collage (C/S483) New | Allegany College of Maryland

This is a full day workshop where we will explore the Art of Collage. This class is for you if have never put together a collage or have created collages.   In this workshop we will discuss collage design, composition, colorwork, elements, adhesives and stitching through paper and fabric. Materials will include reusable papers, cardboard, found objects and fabric. The class will be a combination of collage skills and demonstrations to the student creating several collages.


Take yourself on a treasure hunt through second-hand shops for supplies or go through your house for the following materials:


Paper for Substrate (the background paper or material on which you create your collage).

Cardboard                                                       Sketch book papers – Watercolor or Bristol papers

Canvases (new or used)                                  Old book pages

Calendar pages                                                Junk mail

Scrapbook papers




Markers, colored pens and pencils


Small bottles of several colors of acrylic paints

Cosmetic sponges

Adhesives such as glue sticks, gel medium both matte and gloss

Brushes of different width and sizes

Scissors both straight edge and craft scissors with various edges

Embroidery needles and several colors of embroidery floss

Baby wipes to keep fingers and hands from becoming too sticky

Paper towels



magazine images, paper ephemera, old greeting cards, newsprint, textured papers, wrapping paper, old children’s book images, fabrics from old clothing, fabric trims, found objects, buttons, foreign language papers


Instructor Kitty Savel is a Fiber Artist who lives and practices her art in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her Fiber Art includes paper and fabric collage, wood and found materials assemblage, knit and crochet, screen and block printing on paper and fabric. She teaches fiber art at several venues in the Pittsburgh area including The Society for Contemporary Craft, North Hills Arts Center and Full Pint Wild Side Pub. Kitty has exhibited in galleries and museums in Pennsylvania. Her piece entitled "Color Lattice on Black" was a finalist in the Fusion Art's 3rd Annual Colors International Online Juried Art Exhibition for the month of February 2019. She is currently exhibiting her fabric collage pieces at Loom Textile, located in Pittsburgh’s Strip District. Also, Kitty’s collage work will be featured in the upcoming 2020 Achieving Women of Centre County exhibit to be held at the Bellefonte Art Museum.


Students should bring a packed lunch.
