ACM is pleased to welcome Cheryl Shafer, RDH, BS, COM, to begin the morning Dental Hygiene Update at the Cumberland Country Club. Cheryl is the founder of Facial Function, Myofunctional Therapy. Specializing in orofacial myofunctional disorders, airway/breathing and tethered oral tissues. She worked as a clinical dental hygienist for over 30 years in general dental, periodontics and pediatric practices and is now dedicating her career to empowering others who want to have healthy breathing and facial function.

With a broad perspective in both dentistry and orofacial myofunctional disorders she brings her passion and insight to the importance of understanding the links between oral structure, function and behavior to empower and educate.

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: 

  • Discuss the impacts of oral facial and airway dysfunctions on health and wellness and the dental team's role in recognizing signs and symptoms.
  • Explain assessment tools and treatment options for patients with noxious habits, myofunctional disorders and airway/sleep issues.
  • Understand how oral rest posture with tongue resting on palate and lip seal is the key to establishing healthy facial functions and nasal breathing for all ages.
  • Identify if referral is indicated by applying screening tools for oral function and airway dysfunctions.
  • Discuss Structure, Function and Behavior and how it impacts oral facial complex.
  • Describe the signs of oral facial dysfunction and impact on craniofacial development and occlusion.
  • Recognize signs of airway limitations and myofunctional  disorders.    

Morning session, 8:30 am - noon at the Cumberland Country Club where lunch will be served.

Afternoon session is in ACM's CE building, various rooms.
